Not getting offended...

Ok, so I ran into an old friend the other day, and she had heard I was adopting. I was explaining to her about the costs involved, and the orphanage donation fee.

She then told me, "Well you know, you're just buying a baby...you know that right?"

I was like, huh? " Well no... excuse me but I would like to think that money goes to support all the orphans that don't get or haven't found their forever families yet... and I am sure my daughter has benefited from others donations before we found her..."

That is what I would have liked to say, but I was caught so off guard, I just said, "I hope not?"

Frustrating....

  1. It never ceases to amaze me what people say.

For today be grateful that your Faith wasn't there to see the looks on both faces while this exchange happened...the assumption being that she wouldn't understand the conversation if she were present.

Thank this friend for giving you a little practice with uninvited conversation before your sweet Faith is here.

    Love

  2. No way! I seriously can't believe she said that! It is obvious to me that she is sooo clueless and maybe even a little heartless too! Hang in there!

  3. I always hear these stories of, quite frankly, stupid things people say about adoption, and it always amazes me that there are really people that are so completey clueless!

  4. I just got an email tonight from our agency. They have been working on trying to get our paperwork through quicker because of the possibility of Maggie's heart being worse than reported. CCAA has aggreed to issue LOA next week, BUT she said it may not happen but they will keep on them. So hopefully next week!

  5. I am new to your blog, and wanted to say that I am so sorry for such a rude and ridiculous comment. We have adopted and have heard this a few times. It is worth it all and I look forward to your little sweetie comin' home soon!

  7. Does your friend have children? Did she pay for their birth? I have been asked this (& other) cruel questions (not questions really, as much as very telling statements), and I answer, "We are happy to pay for the care our daughter has received in the first year of her life". It is so irksome to hear these comments. It worries me that Libby will have to face them. My sister-in-law (who adopted from India) always reminds me that we can't protect our children from hearing such things, and so we need to model how to answer such rude questions, so that they will be able to, when we're not with them. This thought helps me phrase answers.
